Summary:
The increase in life expectancy and the growing proportion of older age groups are shifting the focus of healthcare from disease treatment to the management of functional age, preservation of autonomy, and prevention of age-associated conditions. Physical activity is recognized as one of the most evidence-based non-pharmacological geroprotective factors, influencing key biological mechanisms of aging: chronic low-grade inflammation, insulin resistance, mitochondrial dysfunction, sarcopenia, dysregulation of autophagy, endothelial dysfunction, and neuroplasticity. At the same time, a systemic gap is evident in the practice of mass health promotion: commercial fitness is predominantly oriented toward conventionally healthy young and middle-aged individuals (often up to 45–50 years), whereas for individuals aged 50+ with comorbidities, clinical formats of therapeutic physical training and adaptive physical activity (TPT/APA) and rehabilitation prevail. The niche of "healthy 50+" individuals, who are motivated to extend active longevity and prevent functional decline, remains insufficiently supported both organizationally and in terms of educational pathways for training specialists. The aim of this article is to substantiate the relevance of geroprotective mechanisms of physical activity and to propose directions for revising health promotion programs and training systems to establish an accessible "platform for active longevity" for the healthy population aged 50 and older.
Keywords geroprotection, physical activity, active longevity, sarcopenia, metabolic health, prevention, functional age, educational programs
