Age is the greatest risk factor for developing major ophthalmic diseases: cataracts and age‑related macular degeneration. Despite advances in surgical techniques for cataract treatment, the influence of certain vitamins, antioxidants, and other pro‑resolving mediators may be beneficial for preventing or slowing the progression of age‑related cataracts. Unlike cataracts, surgical treatment options for most cases of age‑related macular degeneration (AMD) are very limited, which encourages the medical community to search for new methods of managing such patients.
