Summary:
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a serious disease with a high medical and social role, affecting millions of patients worldwide. The prevalence of OA in the Russian population over 65 years of age, according to the multicenter study EUCALYPTUS, was 57.6%. Moreover, the incidence of OA increases with each decade of life. It is known that the main symptoms of OA are pain and impaired joint function. As a rule, it is the heavy pain syndrome that is the reason for medical help. According to a study conducted on a cohort of elderly patients (mean age 71 years) with OA, the duration of chronic joint pain averaged about 8 years, and the intensity of pain during exacerbation was 65.2 mm on a visual analogue scale. At the same time, more than 48% of patients noted limited mobility, and 62.5% - limited mobility. It seems that it is polymorbidity (structure and severity) that can be a key criterion for the phenotyping of pathological aging.
