We have studied the concept of the resilience on the basis of literature data, and identified the problems associated with the use of this term. Different definitions and the content embedded in them are found in most domestic works for the term "resilience", this leads to additional confusion and inaccuracy in the use of the term in the scientific literature. Early formulations of the resilience were largely psychological in nature, but recent advances have broadened the scope of the concept to include individual and environmental domains, time dimensions of life pathways, and applications to specific forms of adversity. A low level of the resilience makes a person vulnerable to stressors, which leads to adverse consequences. Higher levels of the resilience may lead to desirable clinical or functional outcomes and thus may serve as targets for health maintenance or therapeutic strategies.
Keywords resilience, aging, hardiness
