In elderly patients, there was a decrease in the main proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, and IFN-γ compared to middle-aged individuals. The level of anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-10 also changes when herpesviruses infect the gastric mucosa. In the elderly, there was a decrease in these factors, which explains the development of immunodeficiency in chronic gastritis associated with herpetic infection. A correlation was also found between the content of the main cytokine factors and the manifestations of clinical symptoms of chronic gastritis.
